Some people try to save money by hiring a handyman. However, most handymen are not licensed electricians and may not have formal training in electrical systems or electrical code requirements.
Electrical work must meet safety and building code standards. If wiring is installed incorrectly or unsafe repairs are made, it can lead to electrical hazards such as fires, damaged equipment, or shock risks.
A licensed electrician understands how to diagnose electrical problems properly and ensure installations meet current safety codes.
A GFCI outlet (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) shuts off power when it detects an electrical imbalance that could cause a shock hazard. This often happens in areas where water may be present, such as kitchens, bathrooms, garages, or outdoor outlets.
If a GFCI outlet trips, it may stop working until it is reset.
First unplug anything connected to the outlet.
Next press the Reset button on the outlet. On many newer GFCI outlets, the reset button is red while the test button is black. Older outlets may have the reset button located at the top.
When the outlet resets, you should hear a click and power should return.
If the outlet continues to trip after resetting, there may be a deeper electrical issue that should be inspected by a licensed electrician.
If a light switch stops working, first check whether the light bulb itself has burned out.
If the bulb is not the issue, possible causes include:
• A broken switch mechanism• A blown fuse or tripped breaker
• A loose wire connection
• A faulty electrical circuit
Most of these problems can be diagnosed and repaired quickly by a licensed electrician.
If only part of your home has power, it is often caused by a main breaker problem or a phase loss in the electrical service.
Possible causes include:
• A tripped main breaker• A blown fuse in the electrical service
• A damaged or disconnected wire
• A thermal overload in the electrical system
This situation should be inspected by a professional electrician because it may involve the main electrical panel or service wiring.
Signs You May Need an Electrical Panel Upgrade
Electrical systems must support the increasing power demands of modern homes and businesses. If your building is older, the electrical panel may not be designed to handle today’s electrical load.
Signs you may need an electrical panel upgrade include:
- Your electrical panel is more than 25 years old
- Circuit breakers trip frequently
- Your home still uses fuse-based panels
- You do not have enough electrical outlets for your needs
- Lights flicker or dim when large appliances start
- You notice a burning odor near the electrical panel
If you notice any of these warning signs, contact a licensed electrician for a professional inspection.
